The hardest part of any RPG is the first screen. You have chosen a class, spent forty minutes on a nose, and now a blinking cursor wants a name. You type “Shadow.” Taken. “Shadowblade.” Taken. “Shadowblade1.” Available, and you already hate it.
An RPG name matters more than a name in most games, because you live with it for longer. A single character can last hundreds of hours. The name sits in party finders, guild rosters, trade windows and the top corner of every screenshot you take.
This list has 132 RPG usernames across eleven styles, from dice jokes and raid humour to sci-fi, wasteland and invented words. Each is written without spaces and is 16 characters or shorter, so it should fit most games and platforms. If you would rather make your own, there is a dice table near the end that does it in three rolls.

Why “Unique” Is Harder in RPGs
In a shooter, thousands of players can share a display name. Many RPGs do not allow that. MMOs in particular often require every character name on a server to be different, and the obvious ones went years ago.
That leaves three ways to find a name that is free:
- Combine two ideas that rarely meet. “Necromancer” is taken everywhere. “NecroFlorist” almost certainly is not.
- Use the game’s own vocabulary. Terms like aggro, long rest and side quest make names that other players understand at once and that few have thought to claim.
- Invent a word. A made-up name cannot be taken by someone who never imagined it.
The lists below use all three.

Roll for Your Username
Still nothing? Let the dice decide. Roll a d8 three times, or pick three numbers between 1 and 8, and read across.
| Roll | First word | Second word | Optional ending |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Iron | Lantern | OfAsh |
| 2 | Neon | Courier | OfDusk |
| 3 | Hollow | Pilgrim | II |
| 4 | Gilded | Tailor | Unbound |
| 5 | Rust | Scribe | AtLarge |
| 6 | Astral | Warden | OnLeave |
| 7 | Feral | Medic | InExile |
| 8 | Quiet | Botanist | Returned |
A roll of 3, 5 gives HollowScribe. A roll of 5, 7, 1 gives RustMedicOfAsh. A roll of 7, 8 gives FeralBotanist. If the result runs past your game’s character limit, leave the ending off.
What to Do When Your Name Is Taken
Before you reach for numbers, try these in order. Each keeps the name readable.
- Add a job or a title. Vexmoor becomes ArchivistVexmoor or VexmoorTheLate.
- Swap one word for a rarer one. DarkKnight is gone. SableKnight probably is not.
- Change the ending. Kaldrith, Kaldris, Kaldrow and Kaldrane all sound like the same family.
- Double a letter that still reads naturally. Orrowyn and Orrowynn are both fine. Avoid doubling to the point where it looks like a typo.
- Use a roman numeral. If you must add a number, “II” looks like a title. “2” looks like a second account.
Things to Check Before You Press Confirm
The Game’s Naming Rules
Limits on length, spaces, capitals and numbers differ from game to game. Some reject anything that is not a single capitalised word. Read the rule on the creation screen before you set your heart on a three-word name.
What a Rename Costs
In many RPGs a name change costs money or a rare item, and in some it is not possible at all. Treat the first choice as permanent.
How It Sounds on Voice Chat
Your party will shorten whatever you pick. “RulesLawyerRae” becomes Rae. “TauntOnCooldown” becomes Taunt. Make sure you like the short version too.
Whether It Fits the Character
A joke name is great on your fifth alt. On the character you plan to play for a year, it can wear thin by week three.
Whether You Will Use It Elsewhere
If you stream or post clips, a name that also works as a handle saves trouble later. Our list of YouTube channel name ideas covers the channel side. And for a look at where games themselves are heading, see these AI in gaming statistics.
FAQs
How Do I Come Up With a Unique RPG Username?
Join two things that do not normally go together, such as a class and an everyday job, or build a new word from fantasy-sounding syllables. Both methods produce names that are very unlikely to be taken.
What Is a Good Username for an RPG Character?
One that fits the character, is easy to say, and still reads well after hundreds of hours. For a serious character, an invented name like Ilyndra or Tolvane works. For a lighter one, a game-term joke like InventoryFull does the job.
Should I Use My Usual Gamertag for RPG Characters?
You can, but many players keep the two separate: a gamertag for the account and an in-world name for each character. It keeps the character believable and lets you name alts by class or theme.
Can I Use a Name From a Book, Film or Another Game?
It is better not to. Well-known character names are usually taken or blocked, and some games force a rename when one is reported. An invented name in the same style avoids all of that.
Do Funny Usernames Get You Declined From Groups?
Rarely. Most group leaders care about your role and gear. A name that is rude or hard to read is far more likely to cost you a spot than one that makes people smile.
How Long Should an RPG Username Be?
Between 6 and 14 characters is a comfortable range. It is long enough to be distinctive and short enough to fit most games’ limits and to be read at a glance in a party list.
