ChatGPT Local Business Recommendation Statistics (2026)

5/5 - (6 votes)

Asking ChatGPT for “the best plumber near me” went from a novelty to a habit in a single year. BrightLocal’s 2026 survey found that 45% of consumers had asked an AI tool for a local business recommendation in the past year, up from 6% the year before.

For local businesses, that raises three questions: how many people are asking, which businesses get named, and where ChatGPT gets its information. The 2026 research answers all three, and the answers look very different from Google’s local results. This page collects the figures, with our own calculations where they add something.

Key Statistics

  1. 45% of consumers asked an AI tool for a local business recommendation in the past year, up from 6% the year before.
  2. 64% of adults aged 30 to 44 have done so, the highest of any age group.
  3. 63% of AI users trust the local recommendations they receive, and 88% fact-check them.
  4. ChatGPT recommends 1.2% of brand locations; Google’s local 3-Pack shows 35.9%, about 30 times as many.
  5. Locations recommended by ChatGPT average 4.3 stars, against 4.1 on Perplexity and 3.9 on Gemini.
  6. Businesses with 1,000 or more Google reviews are named 22.2% of the time; those with fewer than 25 are named 3.4% of the time.
  7. ChatGPT names an average of 4.1 businesses per local answer.
  8. Asking ChatGPT the same local question twice, a median of 29% of the named businesses appear in both answers.
  9. ChatGPT’s local answers overlap with Google’s AI Overviews or AI Mode only 19% to 20% of the time.
  10. Business websites make up 42% of all citations in AI local answers; Google Business Profile makes up 28.5%.
  11. For local trades, ChatGPT cites the Better Business Bureau in 38.7% of answers and government licensing sites in 25.1%.
  12. Only 68% of business contact details shown by ChatGPT and Perplexity match the Google Business Profile.
  13. 83% of restaurants were invisible on ChatGPT in one March 2026 analysis, against 14% on Google.
  14. Yelp licensed 330 million reviews and 8 million+ business listings to OpenAI in July 2026.
  15. The popular claim that 60% to 70% of ChatGPT local results come from Foursquare was not supported by a 2026 test of 4,607 runs.

The jump from 6% to 45% in a year is the fastest change in local search behaviour since mobile. Trust is moderate, not blind: most users check what ChatGPT suggests, and reviews remain the main check. Our Google local SEO statistics show how much of local discovery still runs through Google.

How Selective ChatGPT Is

Only 1.2% of brand locations are recommended by ChatGPT, against 35.9% shown in Google’s 3-Pack.

SOCi’s 2026 Local Visibility Index, covering more than 350,000 locations of 2,751 multi-location brands, found that ChatGPT recommends just 1.2% of brand locations, against an average visibility of 35.9% in Google’s local 3-Pack. In retail, only 45% of the brands most visible in Google’s local results were also among those AI recommended most.

BrightLocal reached a similar conclusion from 200,000 local AI searches. Google Maps showed a tracked business in 66% of searches; the AI surfaces showed one in 32% to 38%.

ChatGPT casts the widest net. Ninety per cent of its local results fell within 287 km of the searcher, against 39 to 64 km for Google’s AI answers, so ChatGPT is more likely to suggest a business well outside the searcher’s town. In March 2026 OpenAI added optional location sharing to make “near me” answers more relevant, and in August 2026 it began rolling out ChatGPT Maps in the European Union.

Which Businesses ChatGPT Names

A business with 1,000+ reviews is 6.5 times as likely to be named as one with fewer than 25.

The clearest signal in the 2026 data is review volume. In 8ight.AI‘s test of 39 trades across 49 cities, ChatGPT named 6.5 times as many businesses with 1,000+ Google reviews as businesses with fewer than 25. The median named business had 175 reviews, against 97 for those left out. Star ratings made no difference: the median was 4.9 in both groups. Across 285 trade-and-city pairs, the most-reviewed business was named 22.8% of the time, more than twice the 10.3% rate for the rest.

Claude198 of 1,77611.1%
Gemini17 of 2327.3%
Pilates studios were named 90.5% of the time; boutique fitness studios 6.3%.

Trade matters as much as reviews. Pilates studios and women’s gyms were named most of the time, while boutique fitness studios almost never were. Part of the gap reflects how many strong local options exist in each trade, since ChatGPT names only a handful per answer.

Yext‘s analysis of 6.8 million citations found ChatGPT leans more on listings than any other engine, while Gemini leans on business websites. By industry, listings made up 52.6% of citations in healthcare, and reviews and social reached their highest share, 13.3%, in food service.

ChatGPT leans on the BBB and licensing boards; Claude leans almost entirely on Yelp.

For local trades, ChatGPT and Claude draw on almost completely different directories. ChatGPT cited a business website in 68.1% of answers and a directory or review site in 65.3%. Claude cited a directory in 99.5% of answers, almost always Yelp. Google is mentioned by name in 23% of ChatGPT’s local trade answers but linked in under 1%.

The Yelp Deal and the Foursquare Claim

On July 23, 2026, Yelp announced a licensing deal giving OpenAI access to 330 million reviews and more than 8 million business listings, shown in ChatGPT with Yelp branding. A month later, Steady Demand ran 2,880 prompts across 12 US cities and found Yelp in the business-card data of 95.83% of runs. Foursquare, long said to supply 60% to 70% of ChatGPT’s local results, had a citation share of 0.00%. That widely repeated figure came from a 2025 test of 50 prompts in five Spanish cities and applied only to the first-ranked result.

A business that sees itself in one ChatGPT answer has roughly a coin-flip chance of appearing in the next. That makes single spot-checks misleading in both directions, and is why tracking needs repeated runs across several engines, as most AI visibility tracking tools now do.

Restaurants: The Hardest Category

A March 2026 Local Falcon analysis of 189,905 ChatGPT results found 83% of restaurants completely invisible on ChatGPT, against 14% on Google. Restaurants compete in very large local sets, and ChatGPT names only a handful per answer. Our guide to restaurant SEO covers the groundwork that feeds both.

What the Numbers Point To

FindingWhat It Suggests for Local Businesses
Review count raises the naming rate 6.5 times; star rating makes no differenceVolume of reviews matters more than a perfect average
ChatGPT cites BBB and licensing boards for tradesAccreditation and up-to-date licence records count
Claude cites Yelp in 93% of trade answers; Yelp is in 96% of ChatGPT business cardsA complete, active Yelp profile is now part of AI visibility

Much of this resembles classic local SEO, with different weights. Our comparison of local and national SEO covers the fundamentals these signals build on.
