You can see your Google rankings in Search Console in seconds. You can’t do the same for Gemini. There is no report that lists which of your pages Gemini cites, how often, or for which questions. Yet Gemini now answers questions in its own app, powers AI Overviews and AI Mode in Search, writes Deep Research reports and runs inside thousands of apps built on its API.
The good news is that each of those surfaces leaves a trail. Some show sources on screen, some leave a referrer in your analytics, some appear in server logs, and the Gemini API returns its sources as structured data you can collect yourself. This guide covers all five ways to find pages cited by Gemini, including a ready-to-run script that builds your own citation tracker.

First, Know Which Gemini You Are Measuring
These surfaces use similar models but different retrieval, so a page cited in the Gemini app is not guaranteed a spot in AI Mode, and the other way round. Our explainer on AI Overviews vs AI Mode covers how the Search versions differ.
How To Find Pages Cited By Gemini
Method 1: Check Gemini’s Sources by Hand
The quickest way to see what Gemini cites is to ask it the questions your audience asks.
- Open Gemini and ask a question your page should answer, phrased the way a customer would.
- When Gemini searches the web, it lists the pages it used. Open the Sources list under the answer, or the inline source chips, to see each cited URL.
- For long answers, use Deep Research and check the source list at the end of the report. It often cites far more pages than a normal chat answer.
- Repeat in a logged-out or fresh session, and from a second location if you serve several markets. Answers change with wording, location and history.
- Log every prompt, date, cited URL and whether your page appeared in a simple spreadsheet.
Table 1: A Simple Manual Tracking Sheet
| Prompt | Date | Your Page Cited? | Cited URL | Competitors Cited |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| best CRM for real estate agents | 10 Oct 2026 | No | site-a.com, site-b.com | |
| how to fix crawled currently not indexed | 10 Oct 2026 | Yes | yoursite.com/fix-crawled-not-indexed/ | site-c.com |
| standing desk benefits | 10 Oct 2026 | Yes | yoursite.com/standing-desk-guide/ | site-d.com, site-e.com |
Manual checks are free and accurate for a handful of prompts, but they don’t scale past a few dozen questions.
Method 2: Find Gemini Visitors in GA4
When someone clicks a source link in the Gemini app, the visit often arrives with gemini.google.com as the referrer. Since May 2026, GA4’s default channel group includes an AI Assistant channel that groups recognized AI referrers, including Gemini, as Search Engine Journal reported.
- Go to Reports, then Acquisition, then Traffic acquisition, and look for the AI Assistant channel.
- Switch the dimension to Session source and filter for gemini.google.com.
- Add Landing page as a secondary dimension. Those landing pages are pages Gemini cited and someone clicked.
For history before the new channel, or to catch traffic GA4 doesn’t classify, build a custom channel group above Referral with a source condition like this:
(^|\.)(gemini\.google\.com|bard\.google\.com|chatgpt\.com|perplexity\.ai|claude\.ai|copilot\.microsoft\.com)$
Table 2: What GA4 Can and Can’t Tell You
| GA4 Shows | GA4 Misses |
|---|---|
| Pages cited in the Gemini app that got a click | Citations nobody clicked |
| Engagement and conversions from Gemini visitors | Mobile app visits with no referrer, which land in Direct |
| Trends since you set up tracking | AI Overviews and AI Mode clicks, which count as Organic Search |
Method 3: Build a Gemini Citation Tracker With the API
This is the method most guides skip, and the most useful one for SEO teams. When you call the Gemini API with Google Search grounding switched on, the response includes a groundingMetadata object. According to Google’s grounding documentation, it contains:
Table 3: The Grounding Fields That Matter
| Field | What It Contains | Why It’s Useful |
|---|---|---|
| webSearchQueries | The Google searches Gemini ran | Shows which queries you need to rank for to be cited |
| groundingChunks | Each source with a uri and title | The list of cited pages |
| groundingSupports | Answer segments mapped to source indices | Shows how much of the answer each page supports |
| searchEntryPoint | A search suggestions widget | Must be displayed if you show answers to users |
The script below runs a list of prompts several times, collects every cited source, follows the redirect links to the real page, and saves the results to a CSV file.
# pip install google-genai requests
import csv, requests
from collections import Counter
from google import genai
from google.genai import types
client = genai.Client() # uses the GEMINI_API_KEY environment variable
config = types.GenerateContentConfig(
tools=[types.Tool(google_search=types.GoogleSearch())]
)
prompts = [
"best project management software for small agencies",
"how to fix crawled currently not indexed",
"is a standing desk worth it",
]
RUNS = 3 # answers vary, so ask each prompt more than once
def final_url(uri):
try:
return requests.get(uri, allow_redirects=True, timeout=10).url
except requests.RequestException:
return uri
rows = []
for prompt in prompts:
for run in range(RUNS):
resp = client.models.generate_content(
model="gemini-3.5-flash", contents=prompt, config=config
)
gm = resp.candidates[0].grounding_metadata
if not gm or not gm.grounding_chunks:
continue # Gemini answered without searching
# count how many answer segments each source supports
support = Counter(
i for s in (gm.grounding_supports or [])
for i in s.grounding_chunk_indices
)
for idx, chunk in enumerate(gm.grounding_chunks):
rows.append({
"prompt": prompt,
"run": run + 1,
"title": chunk.web.title,
"url": final_url(chunk.web.uri),
"segments_supported": support.get(idx, 0),
})
with open("gemini_citations.csv", "w", newline="") as f:
writer = csv.DictWriter(f, fieldnames=rows[0].keys())
writer.writeheader()
writer.writerows(rows)
print(f"Saved {len(rows)} citations")
- Get a Gemini API key from Google AI Studio and set it as
GEMINI_API_KEY. - Use 50 to 200 prompts that match how customers ask about your topic, not just your keywords.
- Source URIs come back as Google redirect links, which is why the script resolves them to the final URL.
- Run it weekly and compare. Pages that appear in several runs of the same prompt are your most reliable citations.
- Look at
webSearchQueriestoo. If Gemini searches a phrase you don’t rank for, that is a content gap.
Two cautions. The API is not identical to the consumer Gemini app, so treat it as a strong signal, not an exact copy of what users see. And grounded requests are billed, so check current pricing before running thousands of prompts.
Method 4: Check Your Server Logs
Some Gemini features fetch your pages directly when a user asks. Google’s list of user-triggered fetchers includes:
Table 4: Google Fetchers Worth Watching
| User Agent | What It Means |
|---|---|
| Google-GeminiNotebook (formerly Google-NotebookLM) | A user added your URL as a source in a Gemini notebook |
| Google-Agent | An AI agent on Google’s infrastructure visited your page on a user’s behalf |
| Google-Read-Aloud | A user asked Google to read your page aloud |
grep -E "Google-GeminiNotebook|Google-NotebookLM|Google-Agent" access.log \
| awk '{print $7}' | sort | uniq -c | sort -rn | head -20
These hits tell you which pages people are feeding into Gemini, which is a useful signal of trusted content even when no citation link is shown.
Method 5: Use an AI Visibility Tracking Tool
If you need hundreds of prompts tracked across Gemini, ChatGPT and Perplexity with competitor comparisons, a dedicated tool saves building your own. Several SEO platforms now include Gemini prompt tracking, such as seoClarity’s ArcAI, SEOmonitor’s Pro plan and Semrush’s AI search plans.
Our roundup of AI visibility tracking tools compares the options. When choosing, check whether a tool queries the Gemini app itself or the API, how often it reruns prompts, and whether it stores the actual cited URLs rather than just brand mentions.
Which Method Should You Use?
Table 5: Methods Compared
| Method | Cost | Scale | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manual checks | Free | 10 to 30 prompts | Quick spot checks and new content |
| GA4 referrals | Free | All clicked citations | Proving traffic and conversions from Gemini |
| API citation tracker | API usage fees | Hundreds of prompts | SEO teams that want their own data |
| Server logs | Free | All fetches | Spotting pages users feed into Gemini |
| Tracking tools | Monthly subscription | Hundreds to thousands of prompts | Agencies and brands comparing competitors |
What to Do With the List of Cited Pages
- Find the pattern in your cited pages. Note their format, length, freshness and how directly they answer the question.
- Update pages that were cited and then dropped. Freshness and clear answers often bring them back.
- Study competitors cited instead of you. Look at what they cover that you don’t, such as tables, data or first-hand detail.
- Check Google-Extended. Google’s grounding documentation says grounding doesn’t use pages that disallow Google-Extended in robots.txt. If you block it, your pages can’t be cited in API-grounded answers.
- Strengthen the basics. Gemini’s grounding relies on Google Search, so classic SEO still matters. Our guides to LLM SEO and generative engine optimization cover the content side.
FAQs
Does Search Console Show Gemini Citations?
No. Search Console doesn’t report citations in the Gemini app. Clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode are included in regular web search data and can’t be separated out.
How Do I Know If Gemini Cited My Website?
Ask Gemini relevant questions and check the sources it lists, look for gemini.google.com sessions in GA4, or run a script with the Gemini API to collect grounding sources at scale.
Why Does Gemini Cite Different Pages Each Time?
Answers depend on wording, location, conversation history and fresh search results. Run each prompt several times and track how often a page appears rather than a single result.
Can I Block Gemini From Citing My Pages?
Disallowing Google-Extended in robots.txt stops Gemini’s API grounding from using your pages. It doesn’t remove you from Google Search or AI Overviews.
Is Gemini Traffic Counted in GA4?
Yes, when a referrer is passed. Since May 2026, GA4 groups recognized Gemini referrals in its AI Assistant channel, though app visits without a referrer appear as Direct.
