10 Best ChatGPT Citation Checkers in 2026

5/5 - (6 votes)

Ask ChatGPT a question about your industry and it will often answer with a short list of sources. Those links are the new first page. If your site is among them, a buyer may click through. If it is not, they will read someone else’s version of the facts.

A ChatGPT citation checker tells you which of those it is. You give it the questions your customers ask, and it records whether ChatGPT named your brand, linked to your pages, or sent the reader to a competitor.

We compared ten of them. Before the list, there are three free checks you can run today with no tool at all, a short explanation of why two checkers can disagree about the same question, and a table of what each dollar buys.

Mention or Citation: What a ChatGPT Citation Checker Should Record

These two words get mixed up, and the difference decides which tool you need.

  • A mention is your brand name appearing in the text of the answer.
  • A citation is a link to one of your pages, shown beside a statement or in the source list.

You can have one without the other. ChatGPT might recommend your product and link to a review site. Or it might quote your guide and recommend a rival. A good checker records the brand mentions, the exact URLs cited and the full source list. A weak one only counts how often your name came up.

Illustration with invented brands. A mention, an inline citation and the source list are three different things, and a checker should record all three.

Three Free Checks to Run Before You Buy Anything

1. Ask ChatGPT Yourself

Open ChatGPT, make sure search is on, and ask five questions a customer would ask. Click “Sources” under each answer and look for your domain. Do it again tomorrow. Answers change from one run to the next, so one result proves little. Three or four runs give you a fair picture.

2. Look for ChatGPT in Your Analytics

When someone clicks a link in a ChatGPT answer, the visit usually arrives tagged with utm_source=chatgpt.com. In Google Analytics, open the traffic acquisition report and search the source column for “chatgpt”. The landing pages listed there are pages ChatGPT has cited and people have clicked. It will not show citations nobody clicked, but it is real evidence and it is free.

3. Check Your Server Logs for OpenAI’s Crawlers

OpenAI uses separate crawlers for separate jobs. OAI-SearchBot gathers pages for ChatGPT’s search results, and ChatGPT-User fetches a page when a user’s question needs it. If neither appears in your logs, ChatGPT is not reading your site, and no checker will find citations that cannot exist. Make sure your robots.txt file and your firewall are not blocking them.

If those three checks show nothing, fix access and content first. If they show something, a tool will tell you how much and for which questions.

Why Two Checkers Can Give Different Answers

While comparing these tools, one technical detail kept coming up, and most buyers never ask about it.

There are two ways to get an answer out of ChatGPT. A tool can call OpenAI’s API, or it can run the prompt in the actual ChatGPT product that people use. They are not the same thing. The product searches the web, shows inline citation links and a source panel, and adjusts answers by location. The plain API returns text and does not include that citation layer.

So a tool that relies on the API alone may report mentions that differ from what a real user sees, and may have no real citations to report at all. Before you buy, ask the vendor one question: do you collect answers from the live ChatGPT interface with search on?

Four more things affect how far you can trust a result:

  • How many times each prompt is run. Answers vary, so a tool should sample repeatedly and report a rate, not a single yes or no.
  • Which country it checks from. Answers and sources differ by location.
  • Whether you can see the answer itself. A score with no saved answer cannot be checked.
  • Whether you can export the data. You will want it if you ever switch tools.

What a Dollar Buys: Our Cost Comparison

Headline prices hide large differences in how much checking you get. Using the allowances the vendors publish, we worked out the cost of each unit.

Tool and planMonthly priceAllowanceCost per unit
Hall, free plan$025 questions$0 per question
Otterly.AI Lite$2915 prompts, checked daily$1.93 per prompt
Profound Starter$9950 prompts, 1,500 responses$1.98 per prompt, or about 7 cents per response
Rankscale Essential$20480 AI responsesAbout 4 cents per response
cloro Hobby$100About 50,000 ChatGPT checksAbout 0.2 cents per check

Two things follow. Otterly and Profound cost almost the same per prompt, so the choice between them is about commitment and features, not price. And the developer route is cheaper per check by a wide margin, which is why larger agencies build their own trackers once they pass a few hundred prompts.

The other five tools do not publish allowances in a form that allows the same sum.

The 10 Best ChatGPT Citation Checkers

1. Otterly.AI

Otterly.AI homepage screenshot
Otterly.AI homepage

Website: otterly.ai

Otterly is where most small teams start. You type in the questions your customers ask, and it runs them every day and records whether your brand was mentioned and which websites were cited. ChatGPT is included on the cheapest plan, which is not true of every tool here. It also has a page audit that reviews a URL against more than 25 on-page factors and tells you what to change.

Pricing: Lite is $29 a month for 15 prompts. Standard is $189 and Premium is $489. 14-day trial.

Pros

  • The lowest-priced plan that still checks daily
  • ChatGPT covered from the first tier
  • Page-level audit explains why a page is not being cited
  • Quick to set up, no demo call needed

Cons

  • 15 prompts run out fast once you add product lines or locations
  • Gemini and Google AI Mode cost extra
  • Does not publish how detailed its citation records are, so check during the trial

Best for: Small businesses and solo marketers checking a short list of important questions.

2. Peec AI

Peec AI homepage screenshot
Peec AI homepage

Website: peec.ai

Peec is built around the question “where is ChatGPT getting this from?” Its source analysis shows which domains and pages are cited for your prompts, alongside your position in the answer and the sentiment. That makes it useful for finding the third-party sites you need to get onto. It handles several countries and languages well and connects to Looker Studio for reporting.

Pricing: Starter is about $95 a month, Pro about $245 and Enterprise about $495. Prices are set in euros. 7-day trial.

Pros

  • Strong view of cited sources, not only brand mentions
  • Unlimited seats on every plan
  • Good for multi-country tracking
  • Clean reports that clients and managers can read

Cons

  • Roughly three times the entry price of Otterly
  • It tracks and diagnoses but does not audit your pages or suggest rewrites
  • Short trial
  • Euro pricing means the cost moves with the exchange rate

Best for: Agencies and brands that sell in more than one market.

3. Profound

Profound homepage screenshot
Profound homepage

Website: tryprofound.com

Profound is the enterprise name in this field, and its Starter plan is unusual: it tracks ChatGPT only. If ChatGPT citations are the one thing you care about, that is a fit, not a limit. The company reports processing millions of citations a day, and it holds SOC 2 Type II and HIPAA compliance, which matters to regulated industries.

Pricing: Starter is $99 a month billed yearly, for 50 prompts and 1,500 responses on ChatGPT only. Growth is $399 a month for 100 prompts across ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Overviews, with 9,000 responses and three seats.

Pros

  • 50 prompts on the entry plan, more than three times Otterly’s allowance
  • Security certifications that procurement teams ask for
  • Deep competitor citation data

Cons

  • Billed yearly, so you commit to about $1,188 up front
  • Other AI engines need the $399 plan
  • No API on the self-serve plans
  • Costs rise quickly for larger teams

Best for: Mid-sized and large companies, and anyone in a regulated sector.

4. Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit

Semrush homepage screenshot
Semrush homepage

Website: semrush.com

If you already use Semrush, this adds ChatGPT tracking to the place you do keyword and backlink work. It tracks prompts, compares you with competitors and reports which sources are cited. Its Site Audit also checks whether you are blocking AI crawlers, which is a common hidden reason for never being cited. There is a free AI visibility checker for a first look.

Pricing: The AI Visibility Toolkit is listed at $99 a month per domain. Semrush One, which bundles it with the SEO suite, starts at $199.

Pros

  • SEO and AI data in one account
  • Technical checks for AI crawler access
  • Free checker to try first
  • Large keyword database behind the prompt suggestions

Cons

  • Priced per domain, which adds up for agencies
  • Expensive if ChatGPT tracking is all you need
  • A lot of product to learn

Best for: Teams that want one subscription for SEO and AI search.

5. Ahrefs Brand Radar

Ahrefs Brand Radar homepage screenshot
Ahrefs Brand Radar homepage

Website: ahrefs.com/brand-radar

Brand Radar takes a different route. Ahrefs keeps a very large database of prompts and AI answers, so you can look up how often you and your competitors are mentioned and cited without setting anything up first. It is closer to market research than to daily monitoring, and it is the fastest way to see who dominates a topic.

Pricing: Ahrefs plans start at about $129 a month. Sources disagree on whether Brand Radar is included or sold as an add-on, so check the current plan page.

Pros

  • No prompt setup needed to get a first answer
  • Excellent for competitor and category research
  • Sits next to Ahrefs’ backlink data, which helps explain why a source is trusted

Cons

  • Less suited to tracking your own exact questions day by day
  • Unclear pricing
  • Reports only. No recommendations

Best for: SEO teams already on Ahrefs, and competitor research.

6. SE Ranking

SE Ranking homepage screenshot
SE Ranking homepage

Website: seranking.com

SE Ranking is the budget SEO suite that added AI tracking early. It shows which of your URLs are cited in AI answers and, more usefully, which competitor pages are cited when yours are not. A separate product, SE Visible, covers AI visibility alone for teams that do not need the SEO tools.

Pricing: Reported at about $95 a month with AI tracking included in the Pro plan. Other listings show a lower base price with AI tracking as an add-on, so read the plan page. Free trial available.

Pros

  • Rank tracking, site audit and AI citations for less than Semrush
  • Shows the competing URL that won the citation
  • Agency-friendly reporting

Cons

  • Plan structure is confusing and listings disagree on what is included
  • Less depth on ChatGPT than the specialist tools

Best for: Small agencies and SMBs that want SEO and AI checks on one bill.

7. Rankscale

Rankscale homepage screenshot
Rankscale homepage

Website: rankscale.ai

Rankscale has the lowest published price of any tool here. It tracks visibility and citations across a long list of AI engines and adds an AI Readiness Score that audits single pages. It runs on credits, so what you get depends on how you spend them.

Pricing: Essential is $20 a month, reported to include 120 credits, 480 AI responses and 10 page audits. Pro is $99.

Pros

  • Cheapest paid entry
  • Covers many engines for the price
  • Page audits included

Cons

  • Credits disappear quickly if you track many prompts across many engines
  • A newer product with less history
  • Reporting is plainer than Peec or Profound

Best for: Freelancers and very small teams.

8. Hall

Hall homepage screenshot
Hall homepage

Website: usehall.com

Hall has one of the more generous free plans, and it does something most checkers skip. It shows which AI crawlers visit your site and which pages they read. If ChatGPT’s crawlers never reach a page, that page cannot be cited, so this explains a lot of blank results.

Pricing: Free plan with one project and 25 tracked questions. Paid plans are reported from about $239 a month.

Pros

  • 25 questions free, more than Otterly’s paid Lite plan
  • AI crawler analytics alongside citation tracking
  • Covers ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Gemini

Cons

  • Large gap between free and the first paid plan
  • Fewer extras such as page audits

Best for: Startups and anyone who wants ongoing checks without paying.

9. LLMrefs

LLMrefs homepage screenshot
LLMrefs homepage

Website: llmrefs.com

LLMrefs works from keywords, not prompts. You enter the keywords you already target in SEO, and it generates the conversational questions and tracks them. For an SEO who thinks in keywords, that removes the hardest part of getting started, which is deciding what to ask.

Pricing: Free plan available. Paid plans are reported from about $79 a month.

Pros

  • Keyword-based setup feels familiar to SEOs
  • Free tier to test
  • Aggregates results across engines into one score per keyword

Cons

  • Less control over the exact wording of each question
  • The single score can hide which source was cited, so open the detail view

Best for: SEO teams moving into AI tracking for the first time.

10. cloro

cloro homepage screenshot
cloro homepage

Website: cloro.dev

This one is for developers. cloro is an API that runs your prompt in the real ChatGPT product and returns the answer with its sources and inline citation links as structured data. You can set the country, and state within the US. There is no dashboard. You store the results and build the reports yourself.

Pricing: Hobby is $100 a month for 250,000 credits, and Growth is $500 for 1.5 million. A ChatGPT request with web search uses 5 credits, so the Hobby plan covers about 50,000 checks.

Pros

  • Reads the real ChatGPT interface, including citation links and the source list
  • By far the cheapest per check at volume
  • Country targeting
  • You own the raw data

Cons

  • Needs a developer and somewhere to store results
  • No charts, alerts or competitor views out of the box
  • Far more than a small site needs

Best for: Agencies and in-house teams building their own tracker.

How to Read the Results

  • Look at rates, not single answers. “Cited in 6 of 20 runs” is useful. “Cited: yes” is a coin toss.
  • Write prompts the way people talk. “Best payroll software for a 10-person company in the UK” will show different sources from “payroll software”.
  • Study who is cited when you are not. Those pages show what ChatGPT trusts for that question. Often it is a directory, a review site or a forum thread you could appear on. Our comparison of brand mentions and backlinks explains why those mentions count.
  • Recheck after you change a page. Give it two to four weeks. ChatGPT has to fetch the page again before anything can change.
  • Do not judge by one engine. ChatGPT and Google often cite different pages for the same question. Our piece on ChatGPT vs Google Search looks at why.

If the checker shows you are rarely cited, the fixes are the same ones that help in any AI search: direct answers near the top of the page, specific facts, and a presence on the sites ChatGPT already quotes. Our guide to LLM SEO covers them step by step.

FAQs

What Is a ChatGPT Citation Checker?

It is a tool that runs chosen questions in ChatGPT on a schedule and records whether your brand is mentioned and which web pages are cited as sources. Most also show competitors and track changes over time.

Can I Check ChatGPT Citations for Free?

Yes. Ask ChatGPT your questions and open the Sources list, look for utm_source=chatgpt.com visits in your analytics, and check your server logs for OpenAI’s crawlers. Hall and LLMrefs also have free plans.

How Often Does ChatGPT Cite Websites?

Only when it searches the web to answer. For questions it can answer from what it already knows, it may show no sources at all. Questions about products, prices, recent events and local services are the most likely to produce citations.

Why Does ChatGPT Mention My Brand but Not Link to My Site?

Because it found the information about you on another site, such as a review, a directory or a news article, and cited that page. Publishing clear, specific pages of your own on the same topic gives it something of yours to cite.

Do These Tools See Exactly What a User Sees?

Not always. It depends on whether the tool collects answers from the live ChatGPT product or from the API, and on the country it checks from. Ask the vendor, and compare a few results with your own manual checks during the trial.

How Many Prompts Do I Need to Track?

Start with 10 to 25: your main products or services, a few comparison questions that name competitors, and a few “best” or “how to choose” questions. Add more only when those stop telling you anything new.

Does Blocking GPTBot Stop ChatGPT From Citing Me?

GPTBot collects pages for training OpenAI’s models. The crawlers that matter for citations are OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User. You can block GPTBot and still be cited, but if you block the other two, ChatGPT cannot read your pages when it searches.

Method note: we compared these tools on their published features and pricing and did not run paid accounts on all of them. The cost-per-unit figures are our own arithmetic from the vendors’ stated allowances. Confirm current prices and limits before subscribing.
