Small Business Marketing Budget Statistics 2026

5/5 - (6 votes)

Ask ten small business owners what they spend on marketing and you get ten very different answers. A solo bookkeeper puts $40 a month into a promoted Facebook post. A three location dental practice spends $8,000 a month on Google Ads and SEO. Both call it their marketing budget, and both want to know the same thing: am I spending the right amount?

I pulled together the latest small business marketing budget statistics from 2025 and 2026 to answer that question with data. The figures come from large owner surveys, local advertiser studies, ad platform benchmarks, agency pricing research and CMO budget studies, with the most recent figure picked wherever two datasets disagree.

You get dollar budgets, budgets as a percentage of revenue, 2026 spending plans, channel allocation, costs per lead by industry, data for the USA, UK, Canada, Australia and India, startup and SaaS benchmarks, AI spend and the price of SEO, ads, email, social, content and agencies.

I also ran my own numbers: how many leads $1,000 buys in different industries, what an average local advertiser earns based on its ad spend, and how far a typical small budget stretches on each channel. Those calculations sit in the Editor Picks and in the budgeting section near the end.

How to Set a Small Business Marketing Budget in 2026

Here is the simple framework I use with these benchmarks.

Start with a percentage

Use 4% to 5% of revenue to hold steady and 7% to 10% to grow. On $500,000 in revenue, that is $1,700 to $4,200 a month.

Price your first channel by cost per lead

Divide your budget by the cost per lead for your industry. A plumber with $1,000 a month gets about 14 Local Services Ads leads; a law firm gets about 8 Google Ads leads.

Keep a referral engine running

Referrals lead for 83% of small businesses, so fund reviews, follow up emails and a Google Business Profile before anything else.

Add automation

Automated emails earn about 22 times more per send than one off campaigns, so set up welcome and follow up flows early.

Use AI for production, people for strategy

AI saves hours on content and design, while most owners still prefer human judgment for strategy.

Review every quarter

Costs shifted fast in 2025: Facebook cost per lead rose 21% in a year. Rebalance spend toward the channels with the lowest cost per customer.
