A 20 minute YouTube video holds about 3,000 words. Turn that into text and you get a blog post, a set of show notes, a quote bank, subtitles and a study guide, all from one recording.
The trick is picking the right YouTube transcript generator. Some pull the existing captions in two seconds for free. Others run the audio through speech recognition, label each speaker and export subtitle files. A few add AI summaries, quizzes and mind maps on top.
I run the same Google Search Central video through each tool below and compare speed, accuracy, export options and price. Here are the 10 YouTube transcript tools worth your time.

Two Ways YouTube Transcript Generators Work
Every tool on this list gets text in one of two ways, and the difference matters.
Caption grabbers pull the caption track that YouTube already has. They work in seconds and cost zero dollars, but they copy every mistake in the auto captions, and they fail on a video with zero captions. YouTube, Tactiq, Glasp and the free side of NoteGPT work this way.
Speech recognition tools download the audio and transcribe it with their own AI model, in many cases built on OpenAI Whisper. They take a minute or two, but they handle videos with zero captions, label speakers and export proper subtitle files. TurboScribe, Descript, Happy Scribe, Notta, Rev and Sonix work this way.
How to Get a YouTube Transcript With Zero Tools
Before you sign up for anything, try the free transcript built into YouTube.
On a Computer
- Open the video on youtube.com.
- Click …more under the video title to expand the description.
- Scroll to the end of the description and click Show transcript.
- A panel opens beside the video with timestamps and text.
- Click the three dot menu in the panel to hide timestamps, then select the text and copy it.
On a Phone
In the YouTube app, tap the video title, scroll down the description and tap Show transcript. The app shows the text, but it blocks copying. To copy on a phone, open youtube.com in your mobile browser and request the desktop site.
For Your Own Videos in YouTube Studio
Channel owners get proper files. In YouTube Studio, open Subtitles, pick the video, click the three dot menu next to the language and choose Download. You get an SRT, VTT or SBV file with every caption and timestamp.
The catch: Show transcript only appears when the video has a caption track. YouTube makes auto captions in 67 languages for regular videos and Shorts, but plenty of videos still have zero captions. For those, jump to a speech recognition tool below.
The 10 Best YouTube Transcript Generators
1. YouTube Show Transcript: Best for Quick Free Checks
The built in transcript is the fastest option when you only need a quote or a few lines. It sits right under every video with captions and costs zero.
Clicking any line jumps the video to that moment, which makes it great for finding a quote. The search box at the top of the panel finds any word in the transcript.
Pros
- Free and built into every video with captions.
- Search and click to jump to any moment.
- Caption language switcher for videos with several tracks.
Cons
- Zero download button. Copy and paste only.

2. NoteGPT: Best for Free Transcripts Plus AI Summaries
NoteGPT turns a pasted YouTube link into a timestamped transcript in seconds, with zero sign up for the basic version. It also handles full playlists and videos with zero subtitles.
On the right side, NoteGPT adds AI tools: summary, mind map, infographic, slides, quiz and flashcards. Students and researchers get a lot of value from that mix. The Chrome extension adds the same features right on YouTube.
My test shows the limits of caption based text. The transcript spells crawls as craws and keeps BackRub in lowercase. Fine for notes, though you need to proofread before you publish.
Pros
- Free transcripts with zero sign up.
- Strong AI study tools on top of the text.
- Batch mode for playlists and several links.
Cons
- Zero speaker labels.
- Free AI features need a login and use quotas.
- Some users report quota charges on failed jobs.

TurboScribe runs on Whisper and transcribes the actual audio, so it works on any video, even ones with zero captions. Choose Link in the upload box, paste the YouTube URL and wait a minute or two.
It supports 98+ languages, labels speakers and exports DOCX, PDF, TXT, SRT and VTT. The Unlimited plan takes files up to 10 hours long and 50 files at once, which makes it the best deal for podcasters and agencies with a lot of video.

My rating: 4.6/5

5. Descript: Best for Editing Video by Editing Text
In Descript, the transcript is the edit timeline. Delete a sentence in the text and the matching video disappears. Remove every um and uh in one click.
Upload a downloaded YouTube video or your own recording, and Descript transcribes it, labels speakers and exports SRT, VTT and DOCX files. Its Underlord AI assistant writes titles, show notes and social clips.
Since September 2025, plans count media minutes and AI credits separately, so heavy AI users pay more.

How Accurate Are YouTube Auto Captions?
Good enough to read, rarely good enough to publish as is. Auto captions skip most punctuation, miss names and mangle technical terms. In my test video, a Google engineer says crawls and the captions write craws.
Modern speech models do better. On public benchmarks, Whisper large v3 averages about a 7.4% word error rate, and the best open models on the Hugging Face Open ASR Leaderboard sit near 5.6%. A 5% error rate still means one wrong word in every 20, so a 3,000 word transcript holds about 150 mistakes.
| Method | Typical Accuracy | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube auto captions | Rough, with zero punctuation | Personal notes |
| AI speech recognition | About 93% to 95% | Blogs, show notes, subtitles |
| Human transcription | 99%+ | Legal, research, publishing quotes |
Transcript Export Formats Explained
| Format | What It Holds | Use It For |
|---|---|---|
| TXT | Plain text | Blog drafts, AI prompts, notes |
| DOCX | Formatted text | Editing in Word or Google Docs |
| Fixed layout | Sharing and printing | |
| SRT | Text plus start and end times | Subtitles on YouTube, Facebook, LinkedIn |
| VTT | Like SRT, with styling options | Web video players |
| SBV | YouTube caption format | Re uploading captions to YouTube |

Captions, Accessibility and the Law
Transcripts and captions help far more people than viewers with hearing loss. In a Verizon Media survey of 5,616 US adults, 69% watch video with the sound off in public, and 80% of caption users have zero hearing issues.
The law cares too. WCAG 2.1 Level AA asks for captions on all recorded video. In the US, the DOJ rule under ADA Title II now gives large state and local governments until April 26, 2027 and smaller ones until April 26, 2028 to meet that standard.
Is It Legal to Transcribe Another Creators YouTube Video?
Most people transcribe videos for notes, study or research. Posting the full text online is a different story. The words belong to the creator, so a full transcript posted on your site copies their work.
- Quote short parts with a link and credit to the video.
- Ask the creator for permission before you publish a full transcript.
- Summarize in your own words for reviews and commentary.
- Transcribe your own videos freely. Those words are yours.
This is general information, so check with a lawyer for commercial use.
