Here is the strange part about AI customer service in 2026: almost every company says it works, and about half of customers disagree. Two thirds of CX practitioners think customer experience got better last year. Only 17% of consumers agree. Vendors publish resolution rates of 70% to 80%, while consumers say a bot fully solved their last problem 24% of the time.
I wanted to understand that gap, so I went through the newest research on how people actually feel about support bots and AI agents: large consumer surveys across 20+ countries, analyst forecasts, CX leader studies and the published results of the biggest AI customer service platforms. Everything here comes from data released in 2025 and 2026, with a handful of older incidents kept as context.
The picture that comes out is more interesting than “customers hate chatbots”. People accept AI happily when it is fast, accurate and has a clear exit to a human. Satisfaction collapses when the bot loops, guesses or blocks the way to a person. The difference between those two experiences shows up in loyalty, churn and spend.
Below you get a quick scorecard, my own calculations in the Editor Picks, the consumer side of the story, results for 15 major AI support platforms, well known wins and failures, and forecasts running to 2035.

What This Means for Your Support Team
The data points to a clear playbook. Put a visible human exit in every bot flow, since that single choice doubles trust. Measure resolution the way customers do, by whether they had to come back. Pass full context on every handoff, because repeating information is the most common complaint. Use AI first for the jobs customers want automated, such as order status, subscription changes and bookings, and keep people on complex, emotional or high value cases. Then watch CSAT on AI conversations separately from human ones, so a good team keeps a weak bot visible.
If you use AI chatbots for marketing as well as service, our ChatGPT statistics and AI SEO statistics show how the same tools now shape discovery.
