Google AI Overviews are changing how people interact with search results. Instead of scanning several blue links, users can get a generated answer at the top of the page and decide what to do next.
A new study titled Investigating Click Behaviors On Google Search Result Pages That Produce an AI Overview, by Athena Chapekis, Anna Lieb, Sono Shah, and Aaron Smith, analyzed one month of browsing data from 900 U.S. adults.
Researchers found that users clicked a source cited inside an AI Overview in only about 1% of visits to pages containing the feature.
The same research found that users clicked a traditional search result in 8% of searches with an AI Overview, compared with 15% when no AI Overview appeared.
That is only one study, though. Research from Ahrefs, Seer Interactive, and academic researchers has produced additional data on organic CTR, zero-click searches, publisher traffic, and the effect of AI Overviews on individual websites.
Looking at the findings together gives SEOs a much clearer picture of how Google’s AI search is changing organic traffic.

How Many People Clicked Sources Inside AI Overviews?
The answer is about 1%.
A searcher could see an AI Overview containing several source links without clicking any of them. The summary may have provided enough information to satisfy the original query.
The distinction matters for SEO reporting. A website might appear as a cited source and gain an impression without receiving a corresponding visit.
On desktop, Google AI Overviews can display up to 3 highlighted sources alongside the generated answer, with a “Show all” option for additional sources. The number of visible sources varies by screen size and search-result format. On mobile, Google may hide the sources until users select “Show more.”
The 1% figure also should not become a universal “AI Overview CTR.” Researchers measured clicks on cited sources within the AI Overview, not every organic click that happens on a page containing an AI Overview.
That difference is easy to miss.
Traditional Organic Clicks Also Felle
The research found that users clicked traditional search results in 8% of searches when an AI Overview appeared.
For searches without an AI Overview, the figure was 15%.
That represents a substantial difference in observed click behavior.
The finding suggests that the effect extends beyond the links displayed inside Google’s generated answer. The presence of the answer itself can change how users interact with the rest of the search results.
For publishers, that creates a difficult situation. A page can rank on the first page and still receive fewer visits if Google answers the query before the searcher reaches the organic listings.
Users Were More Likely to End Their Browsing Sessions
The research uncovered another important result.
Users ended their browsing session after visiting a Google results page with an AI Overview 26% of the time. On pages without an AI Overview, the comparable figure was 16%.
That is a 10-percentage-point difference.
The finding supports a simple explanation for some of the lost clicks. Users may see the generated answer, decide they have enough information, and stop searching.
For informational queries, that behavior can create a direct challenge for publishers that rely on organic traffic.
A page may still provide the information Google uses to construct the answer. The searcher may never visit the page.
Longer Queries Triggered AI Overviews More Often
The study also examined the types of queries that produced AI Overviews.
Only 8% of searches containing one or two words generated an AI summary.
The figure rose to 53% for searches containing 10 or more words.
Question-based searches also stood out. Google showed an AI Overview for 60% of searches beginning with question words such as “who,” “what,” or “why.”
Queries containing both a noun and a verb triggered AI Overviews 36% of the time.
The pattern makes sense from a search-intent perspective. Longer, conversational queries often give Google more context about the information a searcher wants.
AI Overviews Usually Contained Several Sources
Researchers found that AI Overviews typically contained 67 words.
The summaries also tended to cite several sources. About 88% of AI Overviews cited more than 3 sources.
That creates a new form of competition for publishers.
Traditional SEO often revolves around competing for positions in a ranked list. AI search can involve competing for a smaller set of citations inside a generated response.
A page can rank below another website in the traditional results yet still become a source for the AI Overview.
Wikipedia, YouTube, and Reddit Were Frequently Cited
Three platforms stood out in analysis published on the Arxiv: Wikipedia, YouTube, and Reddit.
Together, they accounted for about 15% of the links appearing in AI Overviews.
The finding highlights an important change in Google’s information ecosystem. AI Overviews do not rely exclusively on conventional publisher websites.
User-generated content, video, reference material, government pages, and other sources can all enter the citation mix.
For SEOs, that creates a broader visibility challenge. Ranking for a keyword does not automatically guarantee inclusion in the generated answer.
Ahrefs Found a 58% CTR Reduction for the Top Result
Another widely cited analysis looked at Google Search Console data to examine changes in organic CTR.
In its “Update: AI Overviews Reduce Clicks by 58%” study, Ahrefs analyzed 300,000 keywords.
The dataset contained 150,000 keywords that triggered AI Overviews and another 150,000 informational keywords without AI Overviews.
Ahrefs compared December 2023 data with December 2025 data.
The analysis found that the presence of an AI Overview correlated with a 58% lower average CTR for the top-ranking page.
Ahrefs had previously reported a 34.5% reduction in its April 2025 analysis. The updated research therefore suggests that the gap had widened considerably.
Seer Found Organic CTR Recovered to 2.4%
Another dataset provides a slightly different perspective.
Seer Interactive has tracked organic and paid CTR across searches with and without AI Overviews. Its 2026 AI Overview CTR study found that organic CTR for searches displaying an AI Overview reached 2.4% in February 2026.
That figure was up from a low of 1.3% in December 2025.
The increase represents an 85% rise in two months.
However, the CTR remained below the 3.8% organic CTR Seer recorded for searches without AI Overviews in February 2026.
The result adds some nuance to the broader story. AI Overview-related CTR has not moved in one direction every month.
A Randomized Experiment Found a 38% Drop in Organic Clicks
Observational studies can show correlations, but researchers have also started testing the effect of AI Overviews more directly.
A 2026 working paper by researchers from the Indian School of Business and Carnegie Mellon University used a randomized field experiment to examine how AI Overviews affected search behavior.
The study found that showing an AI Overview reduced outbound organic clicks by 38%.
Zero-click searches also increased from 54% to 72% when AI Overviews appeared.
The researchers also found no meaningful improvement in reported user satisfaction when participants saw AI Overviews.
That makes the study particularly interesting because it attempts to isolate the effect of the feature rather than simply comparing searches that happened to contain AI Overviews with those that did not.
Wikipedia Traffic Fell 15% in Another Study
Academic research has also examined the effect on individual publishers.
The “Impact of AI Search Summaries on Website Traffic: Evidence from Google AI Overviews and Wikipedia” study examined 161,382 matched article-language pairs across Wikipedia.
The researchers used differences in Google’s AI Overview rollout across languages and regions to estimate its effect on traffic.
They found that exposure to AI Overviews reduced daily traffic to English Wikipedia articles by approximately 15%.
The effect was not identical across topics. Culture articles experienced larger declines, while STEM articles saw smaller effects.
That difference suggests search intent matters. A short AI-generated answer may satisfy a user more easily for some informational queries than others.
Another 2026 Study Examined 55,393 Queries
A separate study, “Measuring Google AI Overviews: Activation, Source Quality, Claim Fidelity, and Publisher Impact”, examined AI Overviews at a much larger scale.
Researchers issued 55,393 trending queries across 19 topical categories during a 40-day period from March 13 to April 21, 2026.
They found that AI Overviews appeared for 13.7% of queries overall.
Question-based queries had a much higher activation rate of 64.7%.
The study also found that nearly 30% of domains cited by AI Overviews did not appear on the first page of traditional Google results.
That finding is particularly relevant to SEO.
It suggests that traditional ranking position and AI Overview citation are related but separate visibility systems.
AI Overview Sources Can Come From Outside Page One
The 2026 source-quality study found that nearly 30% of cited domains did not appear on Google’s first page for the corresponding searches.
That challenges the idea that SEO teams can simply optimize for a top-10 ranking and expect AI visibility to follow.
Google’s AI system can select sources through a process that differs from the traditional ranking system.
For publishers, that makes original research, clear explanations, topical authority, recognizable entities, and source credibility increasingly important.
AI Overviews Do Not Always Use the Same Sources
Research from “How Generative AI Disrupts Search: An Empirical Study of Google Search, Gemini, and AI Overviews” examined 11,500 user queries.
The researchers compared traditional Google results, AI Overviews, and Gemini responses.
They found that the source sets differed substantially across the three systems. The average Jaccard similarity between retrieved source sets was below 0.2.
The study also found that AI Overviews appeared for 51.5% of representative real-user queries in its dataset.
That result should not be interpreted as Google’s overall AI Overview trigger rate. It reflects the study’s own query sample and methodology.
Still, it reinforces an important point: traditional rankings do not fully predict AI visibility.
AI Overviews Can Change Their Sources Frequently
Ahrefs has also studied the stability of AI Overview citations.
Its AI Overview research found that an AI Overview had roughly a 70% chance of changing between observations.
The cited content lasted about 2.15 days on average, while approximately 45.5% of cited sources were completely new between observations.
That volatility creates a measurement problem for SEO teams.
Checking a query once and seeing a brand citation does not prove that the brand will remain visible tomorrow.
AI visibility needs repeated measurement.
What Do All These Studies Tell SEOs?
The studies use different datasets and methodologies, so they should not be treated as one giant benchmark.
Still, several patterns appear consistently.
First, AI Overviews can reduce traditional organic clicks. The study found an 8% traditional-result click rate when an AI Overview appeared versus 15% without one. Ahrefs found a 58% lower CTR for the top-ranking result in its December 2025 comparison. The randomized experiment found a 38% reduction in outbound organic clicks.
Second, citations do not guarantee traffic. Study’s 1% figure shows how rarely users clicked sources directly from the AI Overview.
Third, query intent matters. Longer and question-based queries trigger AI Overviews more frequently in the dataset.
Fourth, traditional rankings do not tell the whole story. Nearly 30% of domains cited in one 2026 study did not appear on page one of Google’s traditional results.
Fifth, AI visibility can change quickly. Ahrefs found substantial volatility in the sources selected by AI Overviews.
What Should SEO Teams Track Now?
Ranking position still matters, but it should no longer be the only visibility metric.
SEO teams should also track:
- AI Overview appearances
- Citation frequency
- Citation share against competitors
- Brand mentions
- Organic CTR for AI Overview queries
- Organic CTR for non-AI Overview queries
- Zero-click search rates
- Branded-search changes
- Referral traffic from Google
- Conversions from AI-affected queries
- Changes in traffic by search intent
- The stability of AI citations over time
The goal is not to abandon traditional SEO.
The goal is to understand how traditional rankings and AI visibility interact.
What Does the 1% Figure Actually Mean?
The 1% figure does not mean that every website receives a 1% CTR from AI Overviews.
It comes from the Research Center’s analysis of clicks on sources cited inside AI Overviews.
That distinction matters.
A user can see a website cited in an AI Overview, click a traditional result from the same site, search for the brand separately, or leave Google without clicking anything. A single AI Overview citation therefore cannot capture the entire value of appearing in Google’s generated answer.
The most defensible conclusion is narrower: The study found that direct clicks on cited sources inside AI Overviews occurred in about 1% of visits containing an AI Overview.
What This Means for the Future of SEO
AI Overviews are creating a different search environment for publishers and brands.
The old model was relatively simple: rank highly, earn an impression, receive a click, and convert that visitor.
The new model adds another layer. Google can use a page as a source, summarize its information, display the brand inside an AI-generated response, and satisfy the searcher without sending that person to the original website.
That does not make traditional SEO irrelevant. It changes what success looks like.
A publisher may need to measure visibility, citations, branded demand, traffic, and conversions together rather than judging performance from rankings alone.
The latest research also shows why SEOs should avoid relying on one headline statistic. Study’s 1% citation-click rate, Ahrefs’ 58% top-result CTR reduction, Seer’s 2.4% February 2026 CTR, the 38% causal click reduction, and Wikipedia’s 15% traffic decline measure different things.
Taken together, however, they point to a clear shift: Google AI Overviews are changing how often users leave the search results page, and publishers need new ways to measure visibility and value.
