The short answer is human content ranks better than AI. The reason? Human content is accurate, verified, and edited. 

AI content writing algorithms and text generation systems can make massive mistakes. So, unedited AI-generated content on webpages don’t perform well for competitive searches.

My conclusion about AI vs human written content is based on several studies and experiments that I will discuss in this article.

Human-Written Content Achieved 18% Higher Conversion Rates Than AI-Only Content

Visionary Marketing evaluated product descriptions across an e-commerce sample of 218 websites.

The study found that human-written content achieved a 2.84% conversion rate, compared with 2.34% for AI-only content, representing an 18% higher conversion rate.

In contrast, hybrid content (AI-generated drafts edited by humans) achieved a 2.78% conversion rate, recovering 98% of human conversion performance while costing substantially less to produce. 

Lower performance of AI-only content was due to weaker brand voice, fewer product-specific details, and a lack of trust signals such as warranties, sourcing information, and product specifications.

74% of Webpages Contain Some Percentage of AI-Generated Text

Ahrefs analyzed 900,000 newly discovered English-language webpages (one page from each of 900,000 domains) created in April 2025 and found that 74.2% contained some level of AI-generated content, indicating that AI-assisted content creation has become mainstream.

Of all pages, 2.5% were classified as pure AI, 25.8% as pure human, and 71.7% as a mix of AI and human content. Among the mixed-content pages, 25.86% showed moderate AI use (11–40% AI-generated content), 20.50% showed substantial AI use (41–70%), and 15.51% showed dominant AI use (71–99%). 

Supporting this trend, a separate Ahrefs survey of 879 content marketers found that 87% use AI to create or assist with content, while only 13% reported not using AI at all, with blog posts emerging as the most common AI-assisted content format.

What Type of Content Can You Create Using AI? (Google Advise)

-> Using AI to create useful content, such as summaries, transcripts, or articles, is acceptable and encouraged when it benefits users.
-> Using AI primarily for SEO manipulation or spam violates Google’s spam policies and may be penalized by systems like SpamBrain.AI provides no inherent ranking advantage.
-> AI-generated content can rank well only if it meets Google’s quality standards.Google continues to improve its systems to identify and reduce the visibility of low-quality content, regardless of whether it is created by humans or AI.

93% of Users Review AI-Generated Drafts Before Publishing

Most SEO and marketing agencies go for human edited content and don’t reply 100% on AI-generated text. It underscores the importance of human oversight to improve accuracy, maintain brand voice, and align content with Google’s quality guidelines.

Readers Rated AI-Written Blogs 5–6% Lower Than Human-Written Blogs

A multi-country experiment involving 366 participants across 11 countries found that AI-written research blogs were initially rated 5–6% lower in quality than human-written blogs. 

However, when readers were explicitly told that the blog was AI-generated, this quality gap almost disappeared. Importantly, disclosing AI use did not reduce readers’ willingness to engage with the content (e.g., reading, sharing, or exploring the underlying research).

These findings suggest that transparency about AI authorship helps maintain trust without negatively affecting audience engagement, making AI a viable tool for research communication.

Close to 90% of content writers now use ChatGPT for their content writing work. The other two most commonly used writing tools after ChatGPT are Claude and Gemini with 30% and 23% share each. 

Interestingly, specific AI content writing software like Jasper, Frase, Rytr, Byword, ZimmWriter all hold a percentage of 3% each.

AI Content is Not Penalized By Google

Google does not penalize AI-generated content simply because it is created with AI; instead, it ranks content based on quality, originality, usefulness, and E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness). ‘

AI content can harm rankings only when it is thin, generic, duplicated, factually inaccurate, keyword-stuffed, or published without human review, especially for YMYL topics.

A 16-month study by Digital Applied tracked 4,200 articles across 140 domains to compare the performance of pure AI-generated, AI-assisted, and human-written content in Google Search. 

The study found that pure AI-generated content ranked 23% lower on average than human-written content, while AI-assisted content, enhanced with human editing, original data, and expert attribution, performed within 4% of fully human-written articles.

Overall, the findings suggest that AI works best as a drafting tool, with human expertise and editorial oversight remaining essential for achieving strong, long-term SEO performance. 

80% of the Top 20 SERPs Have Content Assisted By AI

81.9% of the content ranking in Google’s top 20 search results is a blend of human expertise and AI-generated content. 

AI speeds up research, brainstorming, outlining, and drafting, while humans contribute originality, expertise, fact-checking, and unique insights that search engines value. 

As a result, the highest-ranking content is increasingly produced through a combination of AI assistance and human oversight. The graph below illustrates this trend.

AI-Generated Abstracts Ranked 42% Lower in Quality Than Human-Written Text

A study comparing 30 ChatGPT-generated and 30 human-written scientific abstracts found that AI-generated abstracts scored 42% lower in quality than human-written abstracts (4.72 vs. 8.09 out of 10, p<0.001).

Human experts correctly identified 93% of AI-generated abstracts, and 3 out of 30 (10%) AI-generated abstracts contained incorrect conclusions. Despite having a low textual similarity (2.1–4.4%) with the original abstracts, indicating minimal plagiarism risk, AI-generated abstracts were consistently perceived as lower quality and less accurate, particularly in specialized scientific writing.

Human Content Has an Average Ranking of 4.4 vs. 6.6 for AI Content

A controlled SEO experiment by Reboot Online compared the search performance of five AI-generated websites and five human-written websites. 

To ensure a fair comparison, the researchers registered 10 brand-new domains with no backlinks, no history, and no existing authority. 

Each website targeted the same made-up keyword, contained content of similar length and optimization, and used nearly identical site templates, hosting, and technical setup. 

The only meaningful difference was how the content was created: five sites used AI-generated content, while the other five used content written by humans. 

Over the course of the experiment, the human-written websites achieved an average Google ranking of 4.4, compared with 6.6 for the AI-generated websites. 

Statistical analysis confirmed that the difference was significant, suggesting that human-written content performed better when all other ranking factors were kept equal.

45% of SEOs Have Reported Higher Content Performance With AI-Written Content

Since ChatGPT’s launch in 2022, the content writing industry has witnessed a radical change. Human writers started getting replaced by AI writing software. More than 80% of digital marketing agencies now use AI writing tools to write blogs, articles, case studies, and other marketing materials.

The news worth noting is that close to 50% of SEO marketers have agreed that leveraging AI writing tools for preparing content leads to better SERP content performance.

Google AI Overviews Reduced Daily Traffic to English Wikipedia Articles by Approximately 15%

A 2026 arXiv study examined the impact of Google AI Overviews (AIOs) on website traffic, using Wikipedia as a case study.

Researchers analyzed 161,382 matched article-language pairs by comparing English Wikipedia pages exposed to AI Overviews with equivalent pages in Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, and Portuguese, where AI Overviews were not yet available.

Using a difference-in-differences methodology, the study found that Google AI Overviews reduced daily traffic to English Wikipedia articles by approximately 15%.

The traffic impact varied by topic. Culture-related articles experienced the largest declines, while STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) articles saw much smaller reductions.

AI Essays Outperform Human Essays in Quality Ratings

In a large-scale comparison published in Scientific Reports, researchers evaluated 145 human-written argumentative essays against 145 ChatGPT-generated essays on the same prompts using 12 experienced teachers and standardized writing rubrics. 

The study found that ChatGPT-generated essays consistently received higher overall quality scores than the human-written essays, particularly for coherence, organization, and lexical sophistication.

However, linguistic analysis revealed that AI writing remained stylistically distinct, exhibiting greater lexical diversity, more nominalizations, and fewer discourse markers and expressions of uncertainty than human writing. 

These findings suggest that while AI can produce essays that often surpass student writing on conventional quality metrics, it still does not fully replicate the natural linguistic patterns of human authors.

No Single Feature Reliably Distinguishes AI from Human Writing: Evidence from 40 Studies

Professor Georgios P. Georgiou of the Department of Languages and Literature and the Phonetic Lab, University of Nicosia, Cyprus, synthesized evidence from 40 peer-reviewed empirical studies published between 2022 and 2026 to examine how AI-generated text differs from human writing. 

The review found that no single linguistic feature can reliably distinguish AI-generated from human-written text across all contexts. 

Instead, AI detection depends on a combination of five cue families: 

  • surface writing features
  • discourse and rhetorical patterns
  • content authenticity
  • probabilistic signals, and 
  • provenance (e.g., watermarking)

The study further concluded that these cues are context dependent and become less reliable after paraphrasing, editing, or mixed human-AI authorship, emphasizing that high-stakes decisions should rely on multiple sources of evidence and human oversight rather than automated AI detectors alone.

The Visionary Marketing 2026 AI Content Performance Study analyzed the search rankings of 1,400 matched articles across multiple industries and found that the impact of AI-generated content varied significantly by sector.

AI-only content underperformed the most in Your Money or Your Life (YMYL) sectors, including health, finance, and legal, where it ranked 43% lower than human-written content. In contrast, the performance gap was smallest in horizontal B2B SaaS, where AI-only content ranked only 12% lower than human-written articles. 

Across all industries, hybrid AI-human content consistently ranked within 1.1 positions of fully human-written content, demonstrating that human editing largely closed the SEO performance gap.

AI Content vs. Human Content: What’s the Difference?

Although both can rank well, AI-generated and human-written content have different strengths and weaknesses.

AI content is produced using large language models trained on massive datasets. These systems identify patterns in language to generate coherent text, making them exceptionally fast at drafting articles, creating outlines, summarizing information, and suggesting headlines.

Human-written content, by contrast, draws on personal experience, industry expertise, creativity, critical thinking, and firsthand knowledge. Humans can evaluate nuance, tell compelling stories, and share insights that AI cannot genuinely experience.

Neither approach is inherently superior for SEO. Success depends on execution.

For example, an AI-generated article that includes original research, expert editing, custom visuals, and firsthand insights will usually outperform generic human-written content that merely repeats what already exists online.
