What are exact match domains (EMD)?
Exact match domains are created with respect to the keywords or keyphrases that a brand is targeting. Some examples are shared below:-
honey-chilli-potato.com (created with the purpose of ranking for keyphrase “Honey chilli potato”
hotels-in-manesar.com (created with the purpose of ranking for keyphrase “Hotels in Manesar”

Who will get hurt in rankings?
Those domains would get hurt who are not providing any value to the user. Those lacking in quality content, user friendly experience, good backlinks etc. might get hurt. You can assume that the extra weightage that was give to the keywords in the domain has been adjusted to keep the crappy and spammy domains out of the serious business.
Is it related to the Panda or Penguin update?
This algorithm is not related to the Penguin or the Panda update. Those creatures have been kept in a separate zoo.
How to remain safe in rankings?
Focus on quality, do not indulge in cheap tactics that won’t help your website in the long run. Sooner of later you will get caught by some or the other ranking algorithm updates. Its better to follow the rules given below:-
1- Focus on the user and provide quality content to the user.
2- Focus on increasing your brand value rather than increasing your search engine rankings.
3- Get authority backlinks.
4- Increase your social media presence.
